13 Maruti Suzuki Manesar plant workers have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the death of an HR manager in a case which could bring forth no witnesses or conclusive evidence. The indicted workers include the entire union body and Jiyalal, a dalit worker who was abused by his supervisor, in response to which the rest of the workers had demanded action on the supervisor. Why has the Indian judiciary gone beyond all provisions of law to bring down this harsh sentence on the worker? The workers suggest that it is but an attempt to set an example before the entire workers movement, that anyone challenging the expolitative and oppressive practices of the management shall be punished.
