Hundreds of transgenders and inter-sex people from community organisations across India gathered in New Delhi on Sunday to protest against the “draconian provisions” of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, which will soon be tabled in Parliament. Transgenders alleged that the bill is being passed by the government to wash its hands off its duty under the NALSA judgment. Supreme Court’s NALSA judgment in 2014 had, for the first time, identified transgender people as “third gender”, affirming their fundamental rights and giving them the right to self-identification of their gender as male, female or third-gender.
