The Delhi Police and its Special Cell continue to arrest young people active in anti-CAA protests, and their tactics of intimidation by summoning over fifty students who were part of the Jamia Coordination Committee, which unstintingly stood against the discriminatory and unconstitutional Citizenship Amendment Act. A concerted attempt is being made to link these democratic protests to the violence that broke out in Northeast Delhi in February. While this effaces the role of leaders and Parliamentarians who called openly for violence against the protestors, it also tries to whitewash the police’s own brutality unleashed on the students of Jamia Millia. It entered the university – with no permission from the Vice Chancellor – and wreaked havoc, breaking bones and CCTV cameras with equal abandon. In its Action Taken Report submitted to a court in Delhi, the Delhi Police professes that, it entered Jamia to save trapped students. These are the stories of the ‘trapped students’ who were brutalised by the force. Just as it has prevaricated consistently on the question of its illegal and unjustified actions at the University on 15th December, the Delhi Police is now trying very hard to persuade us that its arrests and detentions are based on ‘scientific and forensic evidence’.
